Research abstract

New Frontier Aerospace, Inc. (NFA) proposes developing a groundbreaking Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) prototype powered by the innovative Mjölnir liquid oxygen and methane/natural gas (LOX/LNG) rocket engine. Currently undergoing system-level hot-fire testing, Mjölnir employs a Full Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) cycle to achieve high operational tempo, enhanced reliability, and improved safety. The engine rivals modern jet engines in operability while significantly outperforming them with a 100:1 vacuum thrust-to-weight ratio. The proposed OTV is compatible with multiple Small Launch Vehicles (SLVs) as well as larger expendable launch vehicles, ensuring cost-effective and rapid launch options. The OTV is designed for compatibility with multiple launch vehicles such as Firefly, ABL, Stoke Space, and Falcon 9.The OTV offers ESPA and ESPA Grande class payloads rapid access to Earth orbits within hours and cislunar space within days, serving civil, commercial and defense sectors. This proposal focuses on developing, testing, and qualifying the prototype OTV propulsion system centered on the Mjölnir engine. While avionics, communications, and payload systems are excluded from this phase, the completed prototype will serve as a foundation for future integration. Upon qualification, both the Mjölnir engine and OTV will be available to the U.S. aerospace industry, fostering innovation and competition.Key Phase II objectives include demonstrating technologies for resilient space operations using green LOX/LNG propellants, qualifying the high-tempo FFSC engine, and developing the high-DeltaV prototype OTV to support military needs. The project aims to deliver a transformative OTV solution enabling rapid access to all militarily relevant orbits, as well as rapid orbital maneuvering and space logistics capabilities. Supported by multiple government contracts and venture financing, NFA's efforts build on existing progress to accelerate development and rapidly reduce technical risks. Through this focused approach, NFA aims to create a versatile OTV that can rapidly respond to emerging space domain threats while enhancing U.S. capabilities in the military and commercial aerospace sectors. The completed prototype will facilitate further qualification and flight testing, positioning NFA for military, civil and commercial sales. The project's emphasis on innovative high Technology Readiness Level technologies, high performance, and multi-launch vehicle compatibility positions the OTV as a crucial asset for future space operations.
