Research abstract

Benthos, Inc. proposes to evaluate the feasibility of integrating the visor portion of a recently developed, commercially available personal video system to provide an infrared Visor Vision System for use in emergency damage control operation aboard ship. This system, with a modified CCD video camera, a computer and a telemetry link would provide remote sensor data to damage control supervisors while enabling the supervisors to be in constant contact with on-scene personnel. In addition, the infrared vision system will provide on-scene personnel with enhanced visual capability in restricted visibility areas even if computer data is not available. A standard CCD video camera will be modified to be sensitive to signals present at infrared wavelengths. Coupled to the visor, this system will provide a heads-up type display while preserving full field of view vision. Through the addition of a small, dedicated microcomputer and telemetry system, a video overlay will provide large amounts of computer data to the wearer. An expandable spooled optical fiber link, trailed behind the wearer, allows supervisors to monitor a situation remotely via a video link. A two-way audio and data link with the wearer gives command and computer data access. A backup RF voice and data telemetry link would be provided.
