Research abstract

78728 A stand-alone 200 MW radio frequency (RF) test station is needed for developing accelerator structures and components for a future high-gradient multi-TeV collider, such as CLIC. In addition, a high-power RF window will be needed to isolate the test station from a structure element under test. This project will develop such a window for use in the frequency range 30-35 GHz, along with a high-power resonant ring for testing the window. A specialized waveguide taper will reduce and flatten the RF field intensity across the window to values below the multipactor threshold. The resonant ring will have an intrinsic effective power gain of at least 30:1, effective peak power levels of at least 200 MW, and pulse-widths in the range of 100 ns. In Phase I, specialized computational routines will be used to optimize the window design, so as to minimize return loss and Ohmic losses. A window will be built for testing at low power, using a 34.3-GHz resonant ring. Engineering designs will be carried out for high-power (i.e., 200 MW) versions of the window. An improved version of the ring will be built and tested during Phase II. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the applicant: Each 200 MW RF test station needed by the CLIC could represent a market potential exceeding $6 million, and a number of these stations will be required, both for structure development and for RF conditioning of thousands of accelerator elements. Other commercial applications for high-power RF windows exist for fusion plasma heating, high-power radar, and communications.
