Research abstract

Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants are attractive alternatives to current pulverized coal technologies in large-scale stationary applications. However, in order to meet target efficiencies greater than 50%, the inlet temperature may need to be raised to 1500ºC (2732 ºF) or higher. Therefore, this project will develop innovative cooling approaches for the hottest sections of the gas turbines. The approach will address the major deficiencies of current cooling systems: (1) the need to compress the coolant to the working pressure of the turbine, and (2) the fact that heat cannot be added to the coolant to provide useful work through expansion in the turbine. These deficiencies cause an efficiency debit to the turbine subsystem and overall power plant. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The innovative cooling approach should contribute to the durability and longevity of turbine components in IGCC systems, thereby increasing the efficiency of future power production facilities, and leading to reductions in both foreign oil imports and emissions from the combustion of carbon-based fuels.
