Research abstract

Aerosol particles affect the radiative balance of the earth directly, by scattering and absorbing solar and terrestrial radiation, and, indirectly, by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. It is now recognized that the atmospheric loading of aerosols generated through human activities can exert an influence on the earth¿s radiation budget comparable in magnitude with greenhouse gases. However, uncertainties exist in the current understanding these processes. This project will design, construct, and test a multi-wavelength particle-extinction monitor that will provide rapid, real-time measurement of the average aerosol extinction coefficient in a parcel of sampled air. In Phase I, a three-wavelength laboratory prototype will be designed and constructed. Tests will be carried out with respect to linearity of response and short and long term noise characteristics. In Phase II, a field-ready prototype will be constructed, and the sensor will be deployed on various field missions. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The comparatively low cost and ease of use of this sensor should enable the almost routine measurement of the scattering properties of atmospheric aerosols, something precluded by the cost and complexity of current instrumentation. Commercial sales would be expected to the atmospheric sciences and the environmental pollution research and development communities.
