Research abstract

Opportunities exist to develop high-power, high-energy-density, high-durability Li-ion batteries for next-generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Such batteries require the development of a more advanced material to replace the traditional Co2O3-based material used in the positive electrode. This project will develop a novel class of LiCoPO4-based nanomaterials for the high-voltage cathode of Li-ion batteries for applications in PHEV. The new cathodes will demonstrate substantially enhanced energy density, reduced energy cost, and improved stability and cycle life, compared with conventionally used cathode materials. Phase I will identify the underlying technical issues that govern the fabrication and performance of this novel nanomaterial. Then the new material will be used to build and characterize a high power, high-energy-density Li-ion battery. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: This technology should be of particular importance for future PHEV applications that require better power sources and energy storage to provide better mileage (less car weight), better storage space (smaller battery packs), and increased performance (better power characteristics).
