Research abstract

Recent technological advancements and the successful deployment of High Energy Laser Weapon Systems (HELWS) have renewed the Navyís interest in developing advanced Beam Control Systems (BCS) for submarines. The Department of Defense (DoD) has already integrated HELWS into various platforms, including stationary installations, mobile ground vehicles, and Navy destroyers. Additionally, advancements in optical technologies such as Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC), Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), target designators, and optical sensor dazzlers have further increased the relevance of BCS for a wide range of warfighting applications.Ý This proposal focuses on the demanding requirements of HELWS, many beam control technologies developed for these systems are also applicable to non-HELWS applications. The proposed effort aims to design and ultimately develop a High Energy Laser (HEL) BCS for deployment in a submarineís Universal Modular Mast (UMM). MZA will achieve this by leveraging more than three decades of experience in the analysis, design, development, fabrication, integration, and testing of HEL BCS components and systems.ÝÝ
