Research abstract

This Phase I SBIR proposal describes a program to experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of a diode laser-based instrumentation system for simultaneous measurement of the static temperature and density distribution at the compressor entrance face (CEF) of a turbo/turbofan test article. High precision density and temperature measurements along a single line-of-sight will be demonstrated with a target sensitivity of 0.1% in both density and temperature. The proof-of-priciple accuracy measurements will be made in an existing environmental chamber providing precise control over the typical range of density and temperature expected at the entrance face. Tomographic reconstruction of density/temperature distributions in an existing flow facility will also be demonstrated. The Phase II program will then design, fabricate, deliver, and validate a prototype instrument on a designated Air Force engine test stand.
