Research abstract

Small-arms training is expensive and objective feedback is hard to collect, especially in dry fire conditions and using current simulator technology. Live fire provides the most high fidelity training possible, but introduces the challenges related to cost of ammunition, safety and scheduling range time. Current systems are also geared towards an individualís performance, as heís largely competing against himself. There is an opportunity to leverage advances in electronics and software to create a weapon-mounted sensor package that measures the motion of the weapon during the firing process. Tying this hardware to an app that can communicate with multiple devices simultaneously would provide the opportunity to ìgamifyî training, increasing trainee engagement through competition with his peers. Existing systems are widely used but are not tailored for larger groups.ÝnVision Technologyís (an Applied Ballistics subsidiary) engineers have developed a number of low-power, low-cost electronics designs for dozens of commercial products ranging from binocular laser range finders. One common thread across all of these products is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection that enables seamless sharing of data between these platforms and with smartphone applications running on iOS and Android and within ATAK plugins; this thread provides nVision with expertise in BLE that is unmatched in the industry and will be key in enabling its proposed Rifleman-Assisted Instructional Device (RAID) solution to meet the requirements described in the topic
