Research abstract
The Rifleman-Assisted Instructional Device (RAID) addresses critical limitations in current Marine Corps marksmanship training by integrating real-time performance tracking, adaptive analytics, and mixed-reality simulation technologies. Existing training methods lack scalability, real-time feedback, and data aggregation, limiting their effectiveness in preparing Marines for modern combat scenarios. The RAID system leverages weapon-mounted sensors, AI-driven analytics, and augmented reality (AR) overlays to provide immediate, data-driven feedback on shooter performance, significantly improving training efficiency and combat readiness. The proposed Mixed-Reality Combat Simulator, developed by Orama Technologies, consists of PEQ-15 housed sensors, including a precision Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and directional microphone array, designed for seamless integration with standard-issue weapons such as the M4, M27, and M18. These sensors capture shot trajectory, trigger discipline, recoil management, and reloading efficiency in real-time. The collected data is processed through AI-powered analytics, generating actionable insights that enable instructors to provide instant shooter corrections. Unlike traditional simulators, RAID supports both live-fire and dry-fire training, offering a scalable solution across individual and group exercises.Key enhancements in the RAID system include:Expanded Real-Time Feedback & Performance Analytics: Multi-layered AI algorithms analyze shooting mechanics, integrating haptic feedback and visual overlays for instant corrective guidance.Extended Wireless Connectivity & Data Resilience: Edge computing protocols ensure over 150 minutes of offline functionality, allowing data caching and delayed synchronization in network-degraded environments.Advanced Sensor Capabilities & Firearm Action Recognition: Upgraded IMU sensors detect a broader range of firearm actions, including malfunction drills and emergency reloads, enabling comprehensive shooter assessments.Augmented Reality Integration: AR overlays simulate combat scenarios, improving situational awareness and adaptive marksmanship training. The system supports multi-shooter tracking and cross-platform compatibility, making it adaptable to diverse operational environments. Furthermore, real-world validation through field deployments with Ukrainian forces has demonstrated its effectiveness in high-intensity combat training. It enhances lethality, safety, and cost efficiency by reducing reliance on traditional infrastructure-dependent training methods. Its portable, modular design allows for rapid deployment across varied training environments, ensuring continuous improvement in marksmanship proficiency.Ý
