Research abstract

MK V SOC service failures have occurred where the windshield and entire pilothouse assembly have collapsed on wave impact. Such failures have even occurred at moderate speeds in fairly benign seas. The modular pilothouse can also suffer from structuraldegradation due to the disassembly operations required for C-5 transport.A composite pilothouse, with fully integrated windshields panels and modular aft enclosure options, has the potential to substantially improve the operational performance of the Mark V Special Operations Craft (MK V SOC). The Foster-Miller team willprovide a strong, durable integrated structure with multiple novel options discussed herein.Foster-Miller will team with Friede Goldman Halter (FGH) and Structural Composites, Inc. (SCI) to design and implement an all-composite pilothouse for the MK V SOC. The proposed program will pursue development of a complete conceptual design for thecomposite pilothouse and initial testing of key design features. Foster-Miller will lead the overall composite design and address windshield integration, joining and integrated electronics issues. Friede Goldman Halter will provide expertise in the currentdesign and performance requirements along with operational experience. Structural Composites brings strong expertise in large composite structures fabrication, particularly in U.S. Navy and commercial boat applications. (P-01404)The proposed program will directly benefit the MK V SOC with integration of a stuff proof pilothouse system in the near term. The overall technology development will support ongoing integration of composites in shipboard applications for the military whilealso enabling improved durability and performance in the commercial and recreational boating industry.
