Research abstract

An important future light source for the Department of Energy is the planned upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. The APS upgrade will use short electron bunches and deflecting crab cavities to create a one picosecond X-Ray photon source. A main tool in studying cavity electrodynamics is computer simulation, but present tools require too much computer time to simulate APS cavities in the required detail. A way of reducing simulation run times is to use higher-order algorithms for modeling the electromagnetics of the cavity. This project will develop higher-order algorithms based on the Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) method and on the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. These algorithms will allow APS researchers to improve computations and better model the cavity electrodynamics for the planned APS upgrade to a one picosecond X-Ray source. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The improved electromagnetic algorithms should benefit researchers in any DoE program that relies on accurate modeling of electromagnetics.
