Research abstract

THE MAJOR DEFICIENCIES IN CURRENT REAL-TIME AUTOMATIC FAULT DIAGNOSIS APPLICATIONS FOR AEROSPACE SYSTEMS ARE THE HIGH RATE OF FALSE ALARMS, AND THE MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS CAUSED BYINTERMITTENT FAILURES. THESE DEFICIENCIES ARE DUE TO THE INACCURACY OF THE UNDERLYING NUMERICAL MODEL ON WHICH THE FAULT DIAGNOSIS ALGORITHM DESIGN IS BASED. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF EXPERT SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY IN IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF CURRENT REAL-TIMEAVIONICS MONITORING AND FAULT DIAGNOSIS APPLICATIONS, AND INDESIGNING NEW RECONFIGURABLE FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEMS. IN PARTICULAR, WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A RULE SET METHOD ALLOWINGA RULE-BASED SPECIFICATION OF THE DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE IN THESE APPLICATIONS, THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXPERT SYSTEM BASED ON THIS SPECIFICATION, AND THE INTEGRATION OF THIS COMPILED KNOWLEDGE INTO EXISTING REAL-TIME MONITORING AND DIAGNOSIS SOLUTIONS IMPLEMENTED IN CONVENTIONAL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES.
