Research abstract

Systems & Processes Engineering Corporation (SPEC) proposes to develop a Waveform Agile Signal Processor (WASP) to support the next generation of fuzing systems and subsystems. WASP is designed to~provide high performance, waveform agile, adaptive signal processing for a variety of RF and optical fuze sensors. WASP is designed to support pulsed time domain, frequency domain, phase, direct sequence spread spectrum, and other range, velocity, and acceleration measurement techniques employed by modern fuze systems. The next generation of fuzes must be waveform agile to provide maximum effectiveness against a wide range of electronic countermeasure (ECM) techniques. With waveform agility, smart fuzes can select the most effective fuzing methodology against evolving ECM systems on a theater-by-theater or engagement by-engagement basis, even after weapon launch. SPEC proposes to develop a highly integrated programmable signal processor using the latest IC (integrated circuit) and MCM (multi-chip module) technologies that will generate and process a wide range of IF (intermediate frequency) and baseband fuze waveforms, while providing increased reliability, shock hardness, improved producibility, long term storage, and low cost. The rapidly growing wireless WAN/LAN market provides an excellent opportunity to commercialize a digital signal processor for generation and processing of multiple modulation formats. The processor can be used to develop basestations for digital cellular phone networks and the emerging personal communications systems (PCS) market.
