Research abstract

A LASER-ASSISTED, THERMOMECHANICAL PROCESS IS PROPOSED FOR CLADDING OF HIGH MELTING REFRACTORY METALS ON LOW MELTING SUBSTRATES WITHOUT MELTING OR DAMAGING THE UNDERLYING SUB- STRATE. THE PROCESS CAN BE ADAPTED, WITH POST-CLADDING TREATMENTS, FOR PRODUCTION OF REFRACTORY METAL OXIDE, AND CARBIDE COATINGS FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDATION AND WEAR RE-SISTANCE. THE PROPOSED PROCESS PROVIDES FOR CLADDING OF LARGE SURFACE AREAS AT TWICE THE COVERAGE RATE OF CONVENTIONAL FUSION-CLADDING PROCESSES.
