Research abstract

Recent advances in electronics and signal processing algorithms have yielded a variety of possibilities for enhancing hearing. These advances are both in the equipment and signal processing algorithm areas. Miniaturized microphones and audio transducers with excellent frequency response have provided the basis for improved electronic signal processing. Small, low power consumption digital signal processors make feasible implementation of powerful adaptive signal processing algorithms in very small form factor devices. These algorithms provide the means to attenuate background noise, widen the dynamic range of human hearing, and improve sound location capabilities. A Phase I program is proposed that will use a digital signal processing system consisting of non-linear gain, adaptive echo cancellation, and adaptive noise cancellation algorithms to solve hearing enhancement problems. Once a digital solution is achieved the addition of auxiliary capabilities, such as ultrasonic interpersonal communications and electronic sound location indicators (passive sonar-like devices) for night and underwater use, become possible.
