Research abstract
We shall implement multiple complementary waveforms by frequencyseparation with an adaptive waveform selective probability dataassociation filter (PDAF) tracking system. The system will trackpotential targets and maintain a probability estimate of each track. As a result, detection and moving target indication (MTI) may beaccommodated by hypothesis testing on the statistical information inrange-doppler space available from the tracker. This will providefunctions which are close to optimal on a sequential basis whileoptimally selecting the next waveform for each pulse repetitioninterval (PRI) to minimise error covariance. The waveforms will be taken from a library of complementarysets of waveforms selected for their ambiguity performance in rangeand doppler. Techniques for construction of a wide variety of suchwaveforms have been established by Prometheus. Preliminary resultsshow that there are clear advantages in the use of such waveforms withfrequency and/or time separation over currently implemented ones.Phase I work will focus on establishment of a library of waveformswith diverse ambiguity properties, and on implementation of thewaveform selective multiple target tracker with MTI and detectioncapability. A simulation package will demonstrate capability in avariety of clutter and noise scenarios. The ultimate objective of a waveform selective radar system employingmultiple virtual radars will provide back-end multi-function capabilityto existing and future radar systems with waveform agility. It will havehigh-level resolution and detection capacity and thereby enhancesurveillance performance of military radar systems.
