Research abstract

The general objective of the Phase I effort will be to determine how multimedia and Personal Communications Systems can best be implemented in the digital battlefield. The specific objectives for the proposed research may be divided into three categories. The first is to identify how the Army's lower echelons can benefit best from PCS-based rnultimedia technology (MMT). The second is to define objectives and develop a system design for incorporating PCS-based MMT into the digital battlefield. The third is a demonstration of selected PCS-based MMT. Key to this approach is compliance with existing international, national, and defacto standards and using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products wherever possible. Doing so, makes it possible to perform technology intersections of new products with more capabilities at a lower cost while ensuring compatability and interoperability with existing government and commercial products. The anticipated benefits of this effort is the design of a multimedia-enhanced PCS devise usable for a variety of purposes. Some of which are test, image, and video transmission, video conferencing, and image annotation. These functions are in addition to normal wireless voice and data communications.
