Research abstract

DUAL CONTROL OF NITROGEN OXIDES (NOX) AND SULFUR OXIDES (SOX) IN A HOT GAS (1,100 TO 1,300 K) STREAM WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY COMBINING A KNOWN WATER SOLUBLE NOX CONTROL AGENT (UREA) WITH THE PROMISING WATER SOLUBLE SOX CONTROL AGENT CALCIUM MAGNESIUM ACETATE (CMA). A SINGLE LIQUID SPRAY SYSTEM MAY BE CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING 90% UTILIZATION OF BOTH AGENTS WITHIN A 2-SECOND RESIDENCE TIME. PROOF-OF-CONCEPT EXPERIMENTS ARE BEING CONDUCTED IN PHASE I. THESE EXPERIMENTS FOCUS ON THE EVALUATION OF ANY POSSIBLE POISONING OF UREA BY CMA AND ON THE SUBSEQUENT DEMONSTRATION OF SIMULTANEOUS NOX AND SOX REMOVAL. PROCESS OPTIMIZATION THROUGH VARIATIONS IN THE WATER/UREA/CMA MOLAR RATIOS, ATOMIZATION PROCESS, AND AIR-ASSISTED MIXING/ATOMIZATION IS DEFERRED UNTIL PHASE II AND PHASE III, WHEN A COMMERCIAL PARTNER WILL BE IDENTIFIED FOR FULL SCALE TESTS AND COMMERCIALIZATION IN THE LATER PHASES.
