Research abstract

RECHARGEABLE LITHIUM-POLYMER BATTERIES HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR HIGH ENERGY AND POWER DENSITIES. SHORT CYCLE LIFE AND SAFETY CONCERNS, BOTH THE RESULT OF THE METALLIC LITHIUM (LI) ELECTRODE, ARE THE MAIN IMPEDIMENTS. LITHIUM INTERCALATION ANODES CAN ELIMINATE BOTH PROBLEMS. THE PURPOSE OF THE PLANNED PROGRAM IS DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE CARBON-BASED LI INTERCALATION ANODES. IN PHASE I, THE GRAPHITE SURFACE IS BEING CHEMICALLY MODIFIED TO INHIBIT ELECTROLYTE REDUCTION AT THE LI POTENTIAL. THE NEW INTERCALATION ANODES ARE STABLE IN THE PRESENTLY USED LIQUID AND POLYMER ELECTRODES AND SHOW A HIGH REVERSIBLE CAPACITY AT VOLTAGES ONLY SLIGHTLY POSITIVE FOR LI. THESE ANODES WILL GREATLY ENHANCE THE COMMERCIAL VIABILITY OF RECHARGEABLE, HIGH ENERGY DENSITY NONAQUEOUS BATTERIES.
