Research abstract

Direct Energy Weapons (DEW) have matured rapidly in the past several years. Today’s high-power DEW operate in a range of tens of kilowatts, but evolving designs to use hundreds of kilowatts, or even megawatts, is the ultimate objective. To release such intense power, DEW requires extensive power generation that can drain and have significant negative impact on the host platform leaving little or no power for other system needs.  EIC proposes to use nanosized lithium iron phosphate cathode (LFP) cell to develop a compact, lightweight and high-power pulse source modular system where the power output of the pulse source system can be scalable from 16kW to more than 100kW.  The proposed high pulse power LFP Li-ion technology can handle the relatively high powers necessary for DEWs without affecting platform operations during a directed energy engagement.
