Research abstract

This proposal considers the more general problem of detecting and identifying the total signature of a periscope-depth submarine with exposed masts by a variety of radar types and processing schemes. Cortana Corporation and its research institute partner Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VTNSI), intends to base its technical approach on the following five points: mast wake modeling, submarine wake modeling, detection modeling, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), and polarimetric radar. Cortana Corporation was a pioneer in the analysis and modeling of submarine mast wakes and VTNSI has a comprehensive software package, the Extensible Simulation of Ocean Physics (ESOP),that models the multi-physics effects produced in situ by a submarine. The Cortana Team will use this vast experience to develop the basis for a discrimination approach for submarine mast detection and discrimination.
