Research abstract

Submarine masts can be a significant contributor to ship-radiated noise and radar cross-section when employed in near-surface operations. Reductions of noise and signature contributions are critical to submarine survivability and mission effectiveness, and methods to improve performance in this area may be realized through the development of stealthy materials for use in mast structures. This Phase I SBIR Program would investigate the potential of structural plastics/ composites to be used in a low-noise, low-radar signature configuration that has the capability to be used in a structural submarine mast application. Through careful selection and integration of materials, specimen fabrication and performance testing, a solid foundation to investigate the viability of this concept is expected to be put in@place. Radant's expertise in the areas of composites-based product development and manufacturing for submarine structures, as well as stealth-oriented product design and testir;g.will provide the crucial background to ensure the success of this program.
