Research abstract

The cost of second generation (2G) superconducting coated conductors, needed to expand the nation¿s electricity delivery system, largely depends on the ability to manufacture superconducting wire with high throughput. An important parameter that controls throughput is the rate at which superconducting material is deposited in the manufacturing process. Currently, deposition rates remain rather moderate. This project will develop ultra-fast deposition methods for producing high quality films for 2G coated conductors. Phase I will develop an improved method of feeding precursor material, which will allow for enhanced deposition rates of coated conductor material. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Ultra-fast deposition methods should facilitate the penetration of 2G coated conductors into broad commercial markets. Large energy savings have been projected from the use of high temperature superconductors for applications as varied as transformers, transmission lines, motors and generators, and magnetic energy storage.
