Research abstract

40458 Adelphi Technology, Inc. This project will design two inexpensive, compact betatron-based electron sources: one at 5-MeV and one at 35-MeV. The primary design object of these two sources will be low emittance (¿n<5p mm-mrad) while providing more than 109 electrons per acceleration cycle at an operating frequency greater than 100 Hz. Phase I will determine magnet dimensions, pole shapes, pole gap, and the optimum placement of the electron gun and extractor for both of these betatrons. Recently developed computer programs will be utilized to design these compact betatrons. In order to minimize the emittance of the beam, an iris will be used mask out electrons that have large amplitude betatron oscillations. During Phase II, prototypes of the two electron sources will be built. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: A compact inexpensive betatron will make cancer therapy more accessible and reduce health care costs. The betatron would also find application as an x-ray source in medical and industrial imaging.
