Research abstract

A small,  ultra-compact, 10^8 n/s DT neutron generator is needed for multiple applications such as radiography; inspection and  non-destructive testing. The size weight and power (SWaP) requirements are <100 cubic inches, <10 lbs and the system must operate from a CR123 battery or standard power tool lithium-ion battery. Our approach is to further miniaturize an existing neutron generator that has a 10-100x higher yield. The key enabling component is an extremely low power RF driven ion source that currently operates with 3Watts. The goal for this project is to reduce the power requirements to a goal of 700mW, by reducing the plasma volume. A ‘breadboard’ neutron source will be conceptualized and designed. Key components will be developed to demonstrate the improvements are feasible. The overall design will be simulated and all critical components, particularly the ion source and gas handling system, which will undergo development in Phase I, will be demonstrated. Incremental improvements to the ion optics and high voltage power supply will additionally be performed.
