Research abstract

One of the major limits on luminosity in a colliding-beam storage ring comes from the effects due to collisions with the opposing beam. Simulating these effects with high fidelity will enable existing colliders, such as Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), to deliver higher luminosity and guide the design of future polarized electron-ion colliders. However, existing codes have fallen short of delivering ¿real¿ lifetime and emittance-growth predictions. This project will develop technology to advance beam-beam simulations to the point where they can generate real machine measurable quantities with speed and high fidelity. Phase I will involve the development of an enhancements to existing diffusion subroutines, which are used to quickly calculate lifetimes and emittance growth by integration of the diffusion equation. These enhancements will be accomplished by creating a suite of libraries to characterize the orbit and verify the validity of the calculated diffusion coefficients. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should directly benefit the nuclear physics community by providing a code that can model beam-beam effects on the lifetime, emittance, and luminosity for existing and future colliders with relative ease and speed. In addition, the development of a set of library functions to characterize a system¿s dynamics and guide the calculation of relevant diffusion coefficients should be valuable product for modeling a variety of other complex systems.
