Research abstract

78598S Nuclear physicists routinely execute data processing and data analysis jobs on a Grid and need to be able to monitor job execution at an arbitrary site at any time. Existing Grid monitoring tools provide abundant information about the whole system, but are geared towards production jobs and are well suited for Grid administrators, while the information tailored towards an individual user is not readily available in a user-friendly and user-centric way. This project will develop a Grid Service that will be built on top of the Grid monitoring tools used in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider¿s /USATLAS Computing Facility. The service will filter all the available information to provide those parts relevant to an authenticated user in a convenient and flexible way. Using this service, a physicist will be able to monitor the status of the submitted job: place in the queue, time of the start/finish, percentage of being done, error messages, and reasons for failure, etc. Phase I will create a prototype for the Grid Service for User-Centric Job Monitoring by formulating the user-centric requirements for job monitoring and matching them with the information-extracting methods provided by the Capone and MonALISA web services. The extracted information will be exposed as dynamic web pages, which will be user and job specific. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The service should find use in various Grid environments where multiple users run multiple jobs, but need to monitor their jobs on a per-user and per-job basis. High-energy and nuclear physics, space science, and climate modeling would greatly benefit from these tools. Business-to-business applications, where customers need specialized information about jobs, represent potential commercial uses for the proposed system.
