Research abstract

Satellites with payloads to monitor nuclear explosions are under constant threat from both external (e.g., space radiation) and internal (e.g., heat build-up and thermal/electrical management) sources. Not only must payloads be protected from these threats, but their lifetime in space must be extended to continue monitoring capability ¿ without the need for additional satellites, payload replacements, and launches. To address this requirement, this project will develop carbon-fiber-reinforced composites with high hydrogen-content epoxy matrices. The hydrogen content will rival that of polyethylene, one of the most efficient shielding materials. In Phase I, the composites will be developed and tested. Then, the composites will be modified with metallic-coated carbon fiber and thin-film interleafed aluminum to provide enhanced thermal/electrical conductivity and shielding from high energy electrons, respectively.Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Commercial applications for the composite should include commercial aircraft structures and interiors, satellites, wind turbine blades, and ballistic protection for law enforcement officers. In the defense sector, applications include military aircraft and helicopter structures, reconnaissance satellites, high-flying long-duration spycraft, structures for long range missiles, and uninhabited combat air vehicles
