Research abstract

Nu-Trek will design, fabricate, and demonstrate 23 models of GaAs PCDs. Technical characteristics include 50-500 ps response time, 10E6-10E12 rad(Si)/s dose rate capability, and a spectral range of < 1 keV through several MeV. The GaAs PCDs will be used asdose rate monitors, flux monitors, and as detectors in spectrometers. They will supplement/replace Si PIN diodes (faster, less sensitive), diamond PCDs (more reliable) and XRDs (faster, capable of going up to higher energies). The GaAs PCDs will be used inapplications involving intense pulsed radiation sources, such as those used for nuclear weapons effects testing and stockpile stewardship. The Phase II SBIR is a collaboration between Nu-Trek and it¿s customer base, which will be testing the PCDs on abroad range of radiation sources including, Omega, the Brookhaven Synchrotron, Z, Hermes, Saturn, and others. Nu-Trek will design, fabricate, and demonstrate 23 GaAs PCD models that will be used as dose rate monitors, flux monitors, and as detectors inspectrometers for Nuclear Weapons Effects Testing and Stockpile Stewardship application involving pulsed radiation sources. The detectors that will have a time response < 100 ps and are of great interest for applications requiring a fast response time, such as NIF.
