Research abstract

TUNGSTEN IS AN IMPORTANT MATERIAL FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF ORDNANCE ITEMS. PRESENT COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TUNGSTEN AND TUNGSTEN ALLOYS ARE BRITTLE WHICH LIMITS THE USEFULNESS OF THIS MATERIAL. IF DUCTILE TUNGSTEN WERE AVAILABLE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ORDNANCE ITEMS SUCH AS EXPLOSIVELY FORMED PENITRATORS, SHAPED CHARGE LINERS AND FRAGMENTING MUNITION BODIES COULD BE GREATLY INCREASED. ULTRAMET PROPOSES TO INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF A UNIQUE DOUBLE PURIFICATION METHOD TO PRODUCE DUCTILE TUNGSTEN WHICH CAN ALSO PRODUCE A COST EFFECTIVE PRODUCT.
