Research abstract

Karagozian & Case, Inc., along with our collaborators the Texas Tech University’s Combustion Laboratory (TTU-CL), the Johns Hopkins University’s Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (JHU-HEMI), and Combustion Research and Flow Technology, Inc. (CRAFT-Tech), are proposing an effort to develop new experiments, diagnostics, and accompanying Modeling and Simulation (M&S) to determine the amount of dust and debris generated in a weapon strike on responding surfaces.  This effort will leverage and extend four key technologies to develop and demonstrate a predictive M&S methodology.  These four technologies are: (1) meshfree computational solid dynamics (CSD) / fluid structure interaction (FSI) models, (2) high-velocity impact experiments, (3) novel impact diagnostics, and (4) multi-phase flow field and combustion effects.  In Phase I, the Project Team will maximize our leverage of existing data from previous experiments performed at TTU-CL and JHU-HEMI in order to develop and demonstrate the M&S models for one material (e.g., conventional strength concrete), design improvements to improve experiments to better inform the M&S based on the use of existing data, design and demonstrate modifications to TTU’s and JHU’s test setups with a small number of shakedown tests, and develop and demonstrate linkages to CRAFT-Tech’s CFD models for multi-fragment impact effects relevant to agent defeat.
