Research abstract

Karagozian & Case, Inc. (K&C) proposes to develop a software library for a fast and accurate prediction of mass properties general warheads. The library will use Three Dimensional (3D) stereoscopic images for the automatic mass and moment of inertia estimation of fragments generated from arena tests. The software library called Fragment Characterization Library (FCL) incorporates a novel fragment mass estimation methodology. The mass prediction procedure exploits estimated motion and presented area data obtained by processing images acquired by a stereoscopic vision system tracking the fragments. In addition, K&C proposes to conduct in-house lab-scale experiments to generate high-frame rate images of controlled single fragments flyouts. The data from these experiments will be used to evaluate and refine the accuracy of the mass and moment of inertia estimation methodology.
