Research abstract

ISC has demonstrated the feasibility of passive alignment between bump bondedsemiconductors laser chips to polyamide wave guides in a Phase I SBIR program with enoughaccuracy to effect efficient single mode coupling. While this appeared to be an enablingtechnology for telecomm routers and switches, the commercialization path remained unclear. Atwo year company funded project resulted in a commercial product definition supported by TRW,CISCO, Nortel, and GTE. The Phase II project is now well articulated: the development of a 256channel router/switch with 10 Gbits/sec channel bandwidth, reconfiguration time less than onenanosecond and wavelength division multiplexer I/O. The product will be rack mounted andconsume less than 20 watts. The product exploits 3D technology from Irvine Sensors andsuperconducting high speed switch technology from TRW. Nortel, Cisco will act as hardwareproviders to GTE.This product will enhance U.S. telecom capability by at least an order of magnitude. BMDO willexperience dramatic data com enhancements for distributed supercomputer assets.
