Research abstract

The recently commissioned Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility will push available thermal neutron fluxes at least an order of magnitude above that achievable at any other neutron science facility. Current neutron detector technologies cannot satisfy the requirements of the SNS instruments, which include high sensitivity and spatial resolution, a very high count rate capability, low gamma-ray efficiency, and no parallax errors. To satisfy these requirements, this project will develop a detector technology based on close-packed arrays of boron-coated aluminum straws: 1 meter long, 4 mm in diameter, and coated on the inside with a thin layer of 10B-enriched boron carbide. The use of enriched boron carbide will achieve a detection efficiency that will satisfy the SNS requirement. In Phase I, feasibility will be demonstrated by constructing and testing a 1-meter long detector module that incorporates the boron carbide coating. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Neutron scattering is a valuable and powerful technique that is critically important for materials science and structural biology applications. The improved detection capability should be applicable to the development of improved drug therapies and materials that are stronger, longer-lasting, and more impact-resistant.
