Research abstract

The Warfighter AI for Reporting, Detection, and Evaluation for Naval Combat System Readiness (WARDEN) proposal aims to modernize and streamline problem reporting in the Aegis Combat System (ACS) by leveraging a multi-agent architecture, knowledge graph integration, neuro-symbolic AI, and large language models (LLMs). Current maintenance practices often rely on manually generated reports—such as Casualty Reports (CASREPs), 2-KILO logs, and Operational Readiness Test System (ORTS) assessments—which can be inconsistent, incomplete, and time-consuming to analyze. WARDEN addresses these shortcomings by unifying diverse data streams, including real-time sensor telemetry, historical maintenance records, and operator-generated reports, within a single, searchable framework. At the core of WARDEN is a multi-agent system. Sensor Agents continuously monitor ACS components—from radar and sonar arrays to power distribution—while Text Agents parse manually submitted documentation. The extracted information feeds into a knowledge graph that captures relationships among subsystems, known failure modes, and environmental factors. This unified knowledge graph serves as the backbone for a neuro-symbolic reasoning engine capable of diagnosing anomalies by correlating statistical patterns with logical rules drawn from technical manuals. As a result, the system pinpoints potential root causes more accurately and faster than conventional methods. Once failures or anomalies are identified, an LLM automatically generates human-readable, specification-aligned reports that include recommended actions for remediation. This retrieval-augmented generation process ensures the output is both data-driven and context-aware, significantly reducing maintenance burdens on operators and technicians. By integrating explainable AI (XAI) mechanisms, WARDEN offers full transparency into why certain conclusions are reached, allowing human personnel to query the system’s reasoning for critical decision-making. In summary, WARDEN transforms ACS maintenance and readiness from a reactive to a proactive, intelligence-driven process. Its advanced capabilities not only reduce operational workload but also enhance data fidelity, ultimately strengthening fleet-wide mission readiness and combat effectiveness.
