Research abstract

PUSHBROOM SPECTRAL IMAGING SYSTEMS ARE FREQUENTLY CAPABLE OF GENERATING MUCH MORE DATA THAN CAN BE TRANSMITTED TO THE GROUND. FURTHERMORE, THE EXTENSIVE GROUND CALIBRATION REQUIRED IS OFTEN AN IMPEDIMENT TO THE FULL UTILIZATION OF THE DATA. THESE PROBLEMS MAY BE SOLVED BY APPLICATION OF HYMOSS FOCAL PLANE ARRAY TECHNOLOGY, WHICH PROVIDES MASSIVELY PARALLEL PROCESSING OF EACH DETECTOR'S SIGNALS. THIS PROCESSING CAN BE REAL-TIME PROGRAMMABLE AND INCLUDE NON-UNIFORMITY (GAIN AND OFFSET) CALIBRATION, DATA COMPRESSION, EDITING, AND DIGITIZATION AND BUFFERING. THE PROPOSED INNOVATION IS A NEW SIGNAL PROCESSING INTEGRATED CIRCUIT (IC) WHICH, WHEN INTEGRATED WITHIN HYMOSS, WILL ENABLE PUSHBROOM SPECTRAL IMAGING SYSTEMS TO GENERATE HIGHERDATA THROUGHPUT AND TO BE SELF CALIBRATING. THE PHASE I EFFORT WILL CONSIST OF REQUIREMENTS DEFINITION, ELECTRONICS SPECIFICATION, IC DESIGN, CONTROL UNIT SPECIFICATION, AND PHASE II PLANNING. IN PHASE II THE IC AND ITS CONTROL UNIT WILL BE DEVELOPED AND DEMONSTRATED WITH REAL OR SIMULATED DETECTOR ARRAYS.
