Research abstract

The need for effective communications is critical to accomplishing the Navy's mission. However, numerous obstacles, such as waterproof chambers, conductive walls, and high-energy equipment, make the installation and maintenance of an effectivecommunications system difficult. Recent advances in wireless technologies may be able to overcome these obstacles. Based on its Phase I success, Nomadics and academic partner Oklahoma State University offer a system concept that allows the shipwideexchange of voice and other data among mobile warfighters. Further, the system, called SEAnet, can support voice messaging, biomonitoring, personnel locator functions, and other tasks that will enhance mission effectiveness. The system is cost-effective,expandable, and built on open-architecture COTS components to ensure technological longevity.BENEFITS: The proposed system is easily adaptable to other military, government, and private sector applications where mobile resources need to maintain voice anddata contact. The platform nature of the system permits its easy modification to serve in land-based applications.
