Research abstract

50696-98-I Charcoal Fueled Direct Carbon Fuel Cell for Modular Biomass Power Systems--Scientific Applications and Research Associates (SARA), Inc., 15261 Connector Lane, Huntington Beach, CA 92649-1117; (714) 903-1000 Mr. Philip Pesavento, Principal Investigator Mr. Ronald Dilaura, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-98ER82662 Amount: $74,988 There is a rapidly growing market for modular biomass power systems in rural areas. There is a need to advance the economic competitiveness of these power systems. The systems need to use indigenous biomass resources, having significantly improved efficiencies and low emissions. SARA proposes to develop a modular, charcoal fueled direct carbon fuel cell. The low pollution levels, simplicity, low cost, and ability to parallel many modules will allow cost effective electric power generation from 10kW to 10MW power levels. This project will demonstrate the feasibility of a 10kW biomass fueled direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) using charcoal as a fuel. It will be sized to generate 10kW electrical power at an efficiency greater than 60%. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to stationary power for rural villages, schools and hospitals in developing nations, primary power up to 10 MW can be generated for cities and light industrial applications using multiple power system modules. With further development, the DCFC can also be used for power transportation vehicles._
