Research abstract

72176B03-IDigital signal processing electronics is needed to improve upon analog signal processing in nuclear physics applications. Digital pulse processors can perform tasks such as pile-up rejection, ballistic deficit correction, pulse shape analysis of the preamplifier pulses, and determining the position of particle interaction points. However, currently available processors offer few channels per board, a high cost per channel, and only limited digital signal processing, all of which hinder their adoption in nuclear physics applications. This project will develop a series of flexible digital signal processors that will share a common design architecture and will be diversified with respect to speed, resolution, number of channels per board, and cost per channel. In Phase I, two previously developed, prototype digital signal processors will be tested and benchmarked. A determination will be made as to whether or not the designs can serve as a firm basis for Phase II development. Possible improvements to the designs will be identified. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: A family of commercial digital pulse processors should fulfill the needs of experimental nuclear and particle physicists, in both national laboratories and universities. The processors also should find applications in education, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
