Research abstract

70326 Beam transport in inertial fusion induction accelerators requires reliable, compact, and low cost superconducting quadrupole arrays. These multiple beam transport systems are interleaved with induction cores for acceleration, which poses unique requirements on the magnet-interconnect regions, the array cryostat, and the beam vacuum system. This project will design, build, and test a cost-effective quadrupole array that meets the unique requirements of a multi-beam induction accelerator. During Phase I, the superconducting quadrupole array will be designed. Issues to be addressed include coil configuration, beam tube operating temperature, length of interconnect regions between arrays, and the relationship of these issues to heat loads and beam vacuum. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The ultimate commercial application is fusion energy production. In the nearer term, large numbers of quadrupole arrays will be needed for such scientific research facilities as the heavy ion Integrated Research Experiment. Superconducting, highly reliable, low-cost quadrupole arrays are also important for various magnetic separation applications.
