Research abstract

The deployment of 5G networks has led to high throughput and low latency accommodating a wide-range of use case requirements across different industry verticals. The growing adoption of 5G has prompted the DoD to significantly increase their efforts to securely leverage widely available, but potentially untrusted, 5G infrastructure offered by telecommunication operators. The ability to form secure and resilient communication channels through all available cellular and satellite networks would greatly increase the connectivity of military and commercial devices across the globe. For example, an existing 5G infrastructure can be supplemented with satellite communications to increase throughput, reduce latency, and transcend the dependence and security challenges of single provider 5G networks. The Kryptowire team is uniquely positioned to implement the Satellite and Terrestrial Advanced 5G Research (STAR5G) project and deliver a product that will offer secure and private end-to-end communication channels to military or commercial users, with a global reach. STAR5G will be developed as a versatile product, able to leverage trusted, cooperative, and untrusted public or privately owned 5G service operators that encompass both terrestrial and satellite 5G. The proposed STAR5G framework will enumerate all possible paths that flow over a diverse forwarding fabric to allow for configurable selection of multiple uplink and downlink paths. Indeed, STAR5G will empower end users to pick different communication strategies that optimize security, throughput, latency, reliability and routing path options. The company's prior experience in commercializing government funded efforts will be instrumental in successfully bringing the STAR5G solution to the rapidly growing commercial need for resilient and secure communication networks.
