Research abstract

When the military attacks a defended beachhead or a protected harbor, they generally reduce the local infrastructure to a rubble. Therefore, when the beach or harbor is finally secured, the infrastructure has to be brought in by our forces, that is,diesel generators and the associated logistics burden of diesel fuel. A potential solution to this critical logistics problem would be to employ an Ocean Wave Energy Conversion (OWEC) system that could be rapidly deployed offshore. However, OWEC systemshave traditionally been moored in fairly shallow water near the shore, or have been at the shoreline. In addition, most of the traditional OWEC devices have been large, bulky, expensive, and would be very difficult to deploy in an Expeditionary Warfarescenario. This project will demonstrate that an efficient, compact, deployable OWEC system can be effectively moored in any water depth, using a ship of opportunity for deployment. The proposed technology has numerous commercial and military applications, with the nearest-term being provision of electric power at remote ocean and coastal locations. In contrast to existing ocean-wave power conversion alternatives, this new approach offers the promise of a highly-compact, rapidly deployable, highly-efficient,reliable, and low-cost solution.
