Research abstract

"The proposed program addresses the development of a lightweight payload adapter ableto accommodate a wide range of satellite geometries. Although several concepts willbe evaluated before one is selected, the proposal describes a preliminary conceptthat achieves this objective. This candidate solution consists of a graphiteepoxy/honeycomb core laminate formed into an essentially flat plate which providesthe most versatile mounting surface for any combination of primary and secondarypayloads. The only feature that varies from one launch configuration to the next isthe placement of titanium inserts for the payload mounts. An integrallow-bending-stiffness outer band provides the capability to tune the modalfrequencies of the system to achieve a high level of payload vibration isolation. This innovation reduces cost and part count and greatly facilitates the manufacturingprocess while meeting challenging structural requirements without resorting tounproven and difficult-to-obtain materials. The preliminary design includes anoptional feature that allows for the use of constrained layer damping to reducevibration levels during sine-sweep testing. Small-scale specimen modal testing toconfirm the feasibility of this approach to increase structural damping is includedin the Phase I scope of work. The payload adapter researched in Phase I and developed in Phase II will potentiallybe flown on future missions by the contracting companies. The adap
