Research abstract

Low collateral damage/less than lethal weapons systems would make a valuable contribution to both the military and civilian law enforcement agencies. A non-lethal weapon has a use in the expanded operations of the Army which include peacekeeping missions, riot control, and assistance to nations in need. TPL is proposing to develop concepts and design methodologies for several electromagnetic pulse generators capable of disorienting personnel, disabling targeted equipment, disarming munitions, and interrupting enemy communications. These devices have a unique tunable characteristic making them applicable in a variety of situations. Experimental work will include the testing of high performance optical load cells capable of generating EMP and flash binding personnel. In addition to developing concepts for the EMP devices, TPL will address operational scenarios and conduct the development of a preliminary lethality model for the weapons and their application. The team TPL has assembled for this project include experts in magnetic flux compression, weapons lethality, detonation physics, systems engineering and molecularly engineered materials. TPL has been active in the R&D, design, test, and evaluations of conventional and non-lethal/low collateral damage weapons through the SBIR program.
