Research abstract

To meet the demanding aerospace engine conditions (extended time near 1500¿ C), materials are needed that posses high strength, toughness, chemical stability in oxidizing environments, and stable thermomechanical properties at high temperatures. Ceramic oxides are the most promising materials for these demanding conditions. Unfortunately, monolithic ceramics are too brittle and ceramic matrix composites need further development. This is particularly true of the fiber/matrix interface materials for oxide composites. TDA has identified a low cost precursor route to fiber coatings for oxide fiber/matrix interfaces. TDA will use this precursor technology to produce a readily-cleaved crystal coating with controlled porosity. This will produce an engineered magnetoplumbite oxide/oxide fiber/matrix interface for use in high temperature composites that combine the readily cleaved structure of the hibonite with the controlled porosity approach to interface materials.
