Research abstract

The objective of the first phase of this program is to evaluate and develop the technology for the non-lethal temporary of permament incapacitation of equipment and crew using a high power acoustic beam (HPAB) directed energy weapon (DEW) technology. In order to provide the Army with a viable non-lethal weapon SARA proposes an integrated program that will define, in addition to the beam generator technology, the optimum acoustic susceptabilities for equipment and personnel, propagation effects, as well as advanced phased array and nonlinear acoustic beam control to provide operator and helicopter platform safety/enhanced propoagation distances (~10 km). To provide a very high power, efficient and transportable weapon, SARA proposes acoustic source technology based upon pulsed and oscillating combustion. This helicopter weapon concept will provide a wide range of incapacitating non-lethal response options for the Army. SARA personnel combine the highly unique capabilities of high power acoustic beam devices, effects experience and directed energy weapons development. SARA has the unique position of having developed acoustic light arms incapacitation weapons the U.S. Army. We have a very strong capability in the design, development and testing of directed energy weapon hardware.
