Research abstract

Highly sensitive chemical sensing technology is critical for numerous defense and civilian applications, such as detecting chemical warfare agents in hazardous environments to protect military personnel, monitoring air and water quality on military bases, and providing early warning systems for potential chemical attacks. Given that even minute quantities of chemical agents can pose life-threatening risks, the sensitivity of sensing systems must be extremely high to ensure reliable and effective detection. However, the sensitivity of conventional chemical sensing technologies is limited by the fundamental classical limit. This SBIR project aims to develop a new integrated quantum chemical sensor chip technology with significantly enhanced sensitivity beyond the classical limit while minimizing the size-weight and power consumption (SWaP). In Phase I, we will design the quantum entangled chemical sensor chip, make a preliminary test chip, evaluate its performance, and perform a proof-of-concept demonstration. In Phase II, we will fabricate a prototype of the quantum-entangled chemical sensor chip module and test it in the lab. Applications of the quantum-entangled chemical sensor chip will also be explored. In Phase III, we will perform technology transition and commercialization, including conducting advanced prototyping, identifying applications and customers, and technology transition.
