Research abstract

The ability of low energy exploding foil initiators (EFIs) to function in the Trident II (D5) missile system, while subjected to harsh radiation environments, is a major concern of the Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs (SSP). In response, Corvid Technologies is proposing to build upon our successful Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I EFI characterization program to develop a radiation exposure EFI survivability validation framework. In Phase I, Corvid took advantage of the joint capabilities of our Radiation Detection Group and our Advanced Warhead Group to expedite initial EFI testing to compare the detonation of three types of X-ray irradiated, neutron-irradiated, and non-irradiated MIL-SPEC EFI samples. For Phase II, we will characterize several additional EFI types and conduct more comprehensive EFI modeling, exposure, and testing. Corvid will develop and deliver EFI bridge foil radiation survivability validation standards and recommend radiation hardening EFI conceptual design improvements to ensure extreme radiation environment survivability.
