Research abstract

The increasing reliance on space-based defense systems necessitates robust and scalable testing infrastructure to assess microelectronics' resilience against extreme radiation exposure. The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and other defense organizations face a critical shortage of radiation testing facilities, as identified by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Academies of Sciences, and key industry stakeholders, including Boeing and Northrop Grumman. This deficiency results in delays, increased costs, and constrained development timelines for mission-critical technologies. Expanding testing capacity is essential to mitigating these challenges and ensuring the timely evaluation of defense and aerospace microelectronics. To address this urgent need, IS4S is accelerating the development of a new radiation testing facility in the Tennessee Valley, enhancing national capabilities. IS4S has already invested in advanced test assets, including a TriMeV, Hypervelocity Particle Gun, and Pulserad112A, which will significantly increase available testing capacity. These assets will help reduce testing backlogs, improve accessibility, and support national security initiatives by enabling efficient radiation resilience assessments. The establishment of this new facility will provide much-needed regional capacity, alleviating pressure on existing sites while ensuring that critical defense and aerospace programs remain on schedule.Expanding this infrastructure is crucial for maintaining the operational readiness of space-based defense systems and sustaining national security. By increasing testing availability in the southeastern United States, IS4S will improve efficiency, reduce development risks, and ensure that essential technologies are prepared for deployment.
